Lies
âSo who is it?â Mags asks.
âWhoâs lying?â Zoe asks.
âDonât assume itâs just one person,â Dante replies, thinking through the weight of her decision. She double-checks medical records, wanting to be absolutely sure before she says anything. She doesnât like this. She doesnât like the conclusion sheâs been drawn to, but she has to make a decision. Maybe sheâs right. Chances are, sheâs wrong. Damn it. She wants to be right. All she knows is saying nothing is definitely wrong. For better or for worse, she has to tell the crew what sheâs figured out.
âVichy, Mac and Benson.â Dante pauses, seeing the hurt in Vichyâs eyes, knowing itâs only going to get worse. âStep away from Cap.â
Zoeâs eyes go wide. Her eyebrows raise in alarm.
âWait a minute,â Angel says, coming to Capâs defense before he can say anything. âYou canât be serious. This is Cap weâre talking about.â
Dante speaks with cold deliberation.
âYou can stand there with him.â
Vichy and Benson look at each other.
âNo,â Mags says, but not out of defiance so much as shock and disbelief.
âMe?â Cap says, pointing at himself. âYouâre calling me out as one of them? Thatâs ridiculous.â
Dante fights to hide her trembling hands, balling them up into fists. She stares deep into his eyes, looking for any glimmer of the man she once knew.
âAre you sure about this?â Mags asks, appealing for reason.
âHow can she be sure?â Naz says. âItâs just one question.â
âThis is wrong,â Angel mumbles, taking her place by Capâs side. âThis is all so very wrong.â
âExplain yourself,â Cap says, addressing Dante and commanding authority. Itâs an interesting tactic as it assumes heâs still in command, but the power dynamic has shifted in a way Danteâs sure he never expected, with the crew looking to her for direction.
âItâs fake,â she says, holding up the flex with the arrows on it. âItâs not an illusion. Both arrows are exactly the same length. Thereâs no right or wrong answer.â
Mags is confused. âYou lied to us?â
âOf course, I lied. I told you I was going to lie, didnât I?â
âBut?â Zoe says, pointing at Cap. âIf all this was fake, how do you know itâs him?â
âIt wasnât the answers I was looking at, it was your reasoning, your response, your emotions. I was looking for the internal conflict you felt at the prospect of getting this wrong.â
âAnd Cap?â
âEither heâs an alien or a psychopathâtake your pick.â
âWait a minute,â Cap says, shaking his head in disbelief. âSo you have nothing to go on? No proof?â
Dante points at the rest of the crew. âThey thought this was real, but you didnât, did you? You knew it was fake all along. How? Iâm betting you have access to our psych records. You knew this was a game. You knew there was no such illusionâthat thereâs no way to distinguish between whether someone is right or left handed. You knew I was faking it, but you didnât understand why.
âYou saw Vichy sweating over his answer because heâs left handed. Heâs the only one that might see something different, but not you.
